Rare White Squirrel Spotted in Westport

It's unclear if the squirrel is leucistic or albino.

A rare white squirrel was spotted in Sherwood Island State Park.

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection shared a photo snapped by Roger D’Agostin on its Facebook page.

“Has anyone else spotted a leucistic (white) or albino (white with red eyes) squirrel in Connecticut,” the agency asked on its Facebook page.

White squirrels have been spotted in the area before. They are seen from time to time in Stratford.

Leucism is a type inherited condition in animals where there is a partial loss of pigmentation that results in white or pale coloration. It doesn’t affect the eyes. Albinism is a total lack of the pigment melanin and it affects the eyes.
