Weston Police, Bus Company Investigate Accident [Update]

The bus driver was the only person hospitalized, according to Weston police. Westport police say that several students suffered minor injuries, such as bumps and bruises.

11:55 a.m. Superintendent of Schools Elliott Landon issued the following prepared statement:

"We are delighted that none of our students were seriously injured in this accident and thankful for the quick response of the Town's emergency personnel to this incident," he said. "We also are proud of the actions of our school bus monitor to ensure the safety of all our students." 

According to Lt. Jerry Shannon of the Westport Police Department, several students appeared to have suffered minor injuries, such as bumps and bruises. Westport police are assisting Weston in their investigation.

11:36 a.m. As Weston police conduct an investigation in what caused the bus accident this morning, Dattco, the transportation company in charge of Westport's buses, is doing the same.

"We do a full investigation," said Pam Martinez, Dattco vice president of human resources and risk management. "We'll take the driver out of service if necessary [as we investigate]."

The driver is unknown at this time and has been hospitalized with injuries. Dattco will be working with police in the investigation.

"Safety is our number one priority and we preach that. We take everything very seriously," she said."

Original Story: A Westport school bus crashed at the intersection of North Avenue and Lyons Plain Road at approximately 8:34 a.m. According to Weston police, the bus driver suffered the only injury and was transported to Norwalk Hospital.

The bus was taking students to Coleytown Elementary School when it veered off the road and struck an object, causing heavy damage to the front end of the bus.

Superintendent of Schools Elliott Landon could not be reached for comment.

The Weston Police Department and Weston Volunteer Fire Department were on the scene as Danbury-based Modzelewski's Towing cleared small trees in preparation of towing the bus.
