Solid Performances Highlight Greens Farms Academy's Girls and Boys Sports Teams

Both soccer teams posted wins in the past week.

The following sports wrap-up is from Greens Farms Academy:

Girls varsity soccer

The Greens Farms Academy girls soccer team lost to Greenwich Academy on Monday, Nov. 7, in the first round of the FAA playoffs. What was a 0-0 game until the 70-minute mark quickly changed when the Gators were awarded a free kick just outside the box. The ball was sent in to the crossbar and came down in to the goal. This was the only score of the game and ended the Dragons' playoff run.

GFA had its last regular-season game against one of the top schools in WNEPSSA, Miss Porter's School, on Saturday, Nov. 12, losing 1-3. Senior Clare Mengel (Fairfield) scored GFA's only goal off a direct kick from right outside the 18. GFA will next face St. Luke's in the first round of New Englands on Wednesday, Nov. 16.

Boys varsity soccer

GFA boys varsity soccer captured a 2-1 victory in the FAA Tournament semi-final against Hopkins on Wednesday. With a 0-0 score at the half, Hopkins broke the deadlock in the 60th minute. GFA tied it up when junior Jake Sinnott (Fairfield) scored off a pass from senior Sunday Okeke's (Darien). A goal from sophomore Zach Liston (Wilton), off a pass from senior captain Michael Medvedev (Stamford), put GFA ahead for good. Junior goalkeeper Henry Holzinger made 11 saves.

In the FAA finals on Saturday, Nov. 12, GFA lost to No. 1 ranked The Masters School in penalty kicks, 4-3, after holding each other scoreless during regular play. GFA will play in New England Tournament, facing The Wheeler School (Rhode Island) in the first round Wednesday, Nov. 16, at 2 p.m.

Varsity field hockey

The Dragons faced Ethel Walker School on Saturday, Nov. 12, losing 0-4. Sophomores Francesca DeVita (Darien) and Lucy Holzinger (Norwalk) helped feed the ball up the field to senior Chloe Messina (Old Greenwich), but her shots were stopped by the Ethel Walker goalie. GFA had nine shots on goal and five corners. Freshman, Nikki Farber (Westport) made six saves on the day bringing her season total to 118. The Dragons end their season at 6-10.

Cross country

The GFA cross country team ended their season on Saturday in New Hampshire for the New England Championships. Competing on a hilly 3.1-mile track, junior Sean Minson (Darien) placed 34th overall out of 146 runners crossing the line at 20:04 with brother, freshman, Owen Minson not far behind at 20:59. Freshman Charlie Bohnsack (Darien) was the third Dragon across at 21:05. Senior captains Tyler Green (Greenwich) and Scott Barnet (Ridgefield) finished in 21:31 and 21:57, respectively.
