St. Luke’s Welcomes New Head of School—Mary Halpin Carter, Ph.D.

On July 1, St. Luke’s School welcomed its new Head of School, Mary Halpin Carter, Ph.D., to the Hilltop for her first official day.
During her first week as Head of School, Mary reached out to the St. Luke’s community, saying: “This is my first official week as your Head of School. I didn’t want to waste a minute before letting you know how extraordinarily happy I am to be starting this adventure with all of you.”

Former Head of School Mark Davis retired after 20 years of service to St. Luke’s. Davis said of Carter: “Mary has a confident and comfortable bearing that quickly establishes connection and trust in her as a leader. She knows how to plan and unleash the best work from those around her.”

Board Chair Jennifer L. Foster said of Carter: "Mary embodies so many of the traits our community values. She is a highly accomplished, inspirational leader and she is all heart. She loves children and believes learning should be meaningful, challenging, and joyful."

Before arriving at St. Luke’s, Mary spent nine years as the beloved Head at The Derryfield School in New Hampshire. Mary is a Dartmouth alumna and holds an M.Ed. in Teaching, Curriculum, and Learning Environments from Harvard Graduate School of Education, and a Ph.D. in Education and School Leadership from the University of New Hampshire. “Shaping school culture will be my primary role as St. Luke's Head of School,” said Carter. “I will do so with the intent of developing students into practical, ethical leaders who are prepared to lead lives of purpose and meaning. I believe a school can be on the forefront of education while providing a joyful, engaging environment that is a magnet for young people and adults alike."
