Staples Boys' Lacrosse Earns Top Seed in Class L Tourney

The Staples' baseball and boys lacrosse teams may have suffered early exits in the FCIAC playoffs, but now the slate gets wiped clean, as both received high seeds in their respective state tournaments.

The lacrosse squad earned the top seed in the Class L tournament following a 16-0 regular season and the baseball team is seeded No. 2 in the Class LL division following an 18-2 campaign.

The Wreckers are assured of hosting two games in each sport if they win their opening contest. The lacrosse team hosts either No. 16 South Windsor (8-8) or No. 17 Newington (8-8) in a first-round game on Thursday at 3 p.m. Those teams play a qualifying game on Tuesday.

If Staples wins, it would host either No. 8 Trumbull (11-5)  or No. 9 Simsbury (10-5) in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 3 p.m.

If form holds, the Wreckers would take on defending four-time state championship Fairfield Prep in the semifinals next week.

The baseball team will host either No. 31 Hamden (8-12) or No. 34 Crosby (8-12) in a first-round clash on Tuesday at  3:30 p.m. after those two clubs square off in a qualifying tilt on Saturday.

Staples' second-round would be either No. 15 Manchester (12-8) or No. 18 Fairfield Prep (12-8) on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. The baseball quarterfinals also are set for Saturday, sites to be determined.

Here's a look at the schedule for the other Staples teams in the state tournament:

Softball -- Staples (9-9) is the No. 22 seed in the Class LL tourney and plays at No. 11 Fairfield Ludlowe (14-6) on  Tuesday at 4 p.m.. The winner plays at No. 6 Glastonbury (17-3) in the second round on Wednesday at 4 p.m. Glastonbury
received a bye in the first round.

Boys volleyball -- The undefeated Wreckers, 17-0 in the regular season, received a bye in the first round of the Class L tournament. They will host either No. 9 Danbury (10-7) or No. 9 Norwich Free Academy (9-8) in the quarterfinals on  Friday at 7 p.m.

Girls lacrosse -- Staples (11-5) is the No. 10 seed in the Division II tournament and hosts No. 23 Ridgefield (7-9) in a qualifying game Tuesday at 5 p.m.. The winner takes on No. 7 New Milford (11-4) or No. 26 Norwalk (6-9-1) in the first
round on Thursday.

Girls tennis -- Staples, which earned the No. 5 seed in the Class L tournament following a 15-2 regular season, hosts No. 28 Westhill (8-8) in a qualifying match on Tuesday at 12:30. If the Wreckers advance, they also will host the winner of No. 12 Hall (13-4) or No. 21 Ridgefield (9-7) later in the day at 3 p.m.
