WETHERSFIELD, CT — After battling through an 80-minute marathon in the FCIAC finals two weeks ago, with neither team scoring a goal and being declared co-champions, it was hardly expected that Saturday's CIAC Class L championship field hockey tilt between Staples and Darien would end in a final score more resembling a football game.

The two state powerhouses lit up the scoreboard early, with five goals being tallied in the opening half. After taking a 3-2 lead into intermission, the Wreckers added an insurance tally in the second half to post a 4-2 win and the school's fourth consecutive state championship.

Four different Wreckers scored goals: Ava Ekholdt, Laine Ambrose, Erica Fanning and Ella Bloomingdale. Roxanne Augeri earned the victory in goal for Staples. Molly Hellman scored both goals for Darien.
