Staples Girls’ Golf Takes Fourth Place in State Championships
Freshman Sensation Sophia Sarrazin places fourth for individual competition as well.

The Staples Girls’ Golf Team capped off a successful season by finishing fourth in the state at the CIAC Championships on Tuesday, as freshman sensation Sophia Sarrazin carded a 78 to take fourth place, too, in the individual division.
Junior Captain Claudia Fernandez and freshman Claire Gordy picked the right day to break 100 for the first time in their careers to help secure the team’s fourth place. Junior Captain Brianna Dwyer and freshman Lizzie Kuehndorf also scored for the Wreckers, while injured Captain Deniz Elden even played a role as a spectator spotting balls.
“It was the best team effort of the season, with everyone contributing. We were ranked fifth in the state, so to finish fourth is even better. The personal bests of Claire and Claudia, and the outstanding round for Sophia also added to a super ending to our super season, “ said Coach Patty Kondub.

Fellow FCIAC teams New Canaan, Greenwich, and Fairfield Warde placed 1-2-3 respectively, and to be noted, this was a three-peat for the State Champion NC Rams.
“This Varsity squad of three freshman and three juniors greatly improved upon last year’s record, finishing 11-4 in the regular season, and placing fourth in the FCIAC Championships, too. Last year we did not even qualify for the FCIACS. Of those four regular season losses, two were to the powerhouse Rams, one to Greenwich, and one to Warde. And actually we split the season with Warde,” elaborated Kondub.

The Wreckers finished on a high note in the post-season, after a rigorous season of playing three matches per week Monday -Thursday’s in April and May.
The team looks to unfurl FCIAC and State Championship banners of their own in the near future, as they did in 2006 and 2007.
