Staples High School Runners Win State Open

The entire boys team and an individual girl will represent the Wreckers next weekend at the New England Cross Country Championships.

MANCHESTER, CT — For the second straight year, the boys cross country team from Staples High School captured the State Open championship Friday at Wickham Park in Manchester.

Staples compiled 61 points to hold off runnerup Danbury, which had 77. The two schools had also placed first and second in the 2015 Open.

In a repeat duel from the previous week's class meet, the Wreckers' Zakeer Ahmad edged Fairfield Prep's Drew Thompson to capture the boys overall race. Ahmad toured the hilly 3.1 mile course in 15:46.

Sunil Green (12th), Benjamin Seiple (14th) and William Landowne (21st) also placed in the top 25 for Staples, which advances to the New England Cross Country Championships Nov. 12 at Ponaganset High School in North Scituate, R.I.

The Wreckers will also be represented in the girls race at the New Englands, as Susannah Martin qualified by virtue of her 11th place finish at the Open.
