Staples' Lesch Named Soccer All-American

The Notre Dame-bound senior is the seventh Staples' player to be recognized nationally

Staples senior midfielder Brendan Lesch has been named a boys soccer all-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Headed to Notre Dame next fall, Lesch is the seventh player in the history of  Wreckers' program to earn this award and one of three honorees from Connecticut.

Also selected as all-Americans were Farmington's Kevin Michalak and Montville's  Tyler Leeman. They will join Lesch  at the All-America banquet in Baltimore next month.

"(He has an) incredible passion for the game, (a) lifelong desire to excel, and constant willingness to work hard and improve," Staples coach Dan Woog said.

According to the team's web site, previous NSCAA All-Americans from Staples include Ed Murphy in 1973, Phil Moen (1976) and Kyle Martino (1998).

Three Wreckers have been named Parade Magazine All-Americans:  Mark Noonan in 1982, Mike Clifford (1984) and Chris Mitchell (1990).

For the second straight year, Lesch earned spots on the All-New England and All-State squads.

The Wreckers came up just short in their bid for a second consecutive state championship, falling to Farmington 2-1 in the Class LL title game.
