Staples Spring Sports Wrapup
Despite some postseason disappointments, Staples' spring teams enjoyed banner years.

Here is a final roundup of how the Staples sports teams fared during the spring season:
Baseball (18-4) — The Wreckers posted the best regular season in school history at 18-2, but the postseason was a major disappointment as Staples lost in the quarterfinals of the FCIAC playoffs (Westhill) and first round of the Class LL state tournament (Hamden).
Boys lacrosse (18-2) —The Wreckers enjoyed the greatest year in school history, completing a 16-0 regular season. Staples was upset by St. Joseph in the quarterfinals of the FCIAC playoffs, but earned the top seed in the Class L state tournament. The Wreckers advanced to the semifinals, where they nearly ousted four-time defending state champion Fairfield Prep. They fell to the Jesuits, 9-8, after building a 7-4 lead late in the third quarter.

Girls lacrosse (14-7) — Staples qualified for the FCIAC playoffs, losing in the first round, after an 11-5 regular season. The Wreckers then made a surprising run to the Division II state championship game, falling to FCIAC rival Fairfield Ludlowe, 15-9, in the finals.
Softball (9-10) — Staples missed the FCIAC playoffs after a 9-9 regular season, then bowed out in the first round of the Class LL state tournament against Ludlowe.

Boys volleyball (21-1) — A sure thing turned out to be not a sure thing. The Wreckers finished the regular season unbeaten at 17-0, won the FCIAC title and extended their match winning streak to 101. But they were stunned by Southington in the Class LL title game, denying them a fifth consecutive state championship. Staples had beaten Southington in the previous three state title matches.
Boys tennis (19-1) — Staples finished the regular season 17-0 and was ranked No. 1 in the state, but the Wreckers were upset by New Canaan in the FCIAC finals. Top seed Daniel Hirschberg won the Class LL singles title. Staples finished third in the Class LL team competition behind Greenwich and Fairfield Prep.
Girls tennis (17-4) — The Wreckers finished the regular season 15-2, then lost in the semifinals of the FCIAC playoffs and the semifinals of the Class L state tournament.
Boys golf (17-1-1) — Staples won the FCIAC title, then defended its Division I state championship. Dylan Murray shot a 72 to share medalist honors. The Wreckers' one loss during the regular season came against Trumbull, which snapped a 36-match winning streak.
Outdoor track —The Staples boys and girls each finished sixth in the Class LL meet. Then boys then placed 19th in the state Open meet while the girls finished outside the top 60.
