Staples Boys Wins FCIAC Indoor Track Title

Henry Wynne finishes first in the 1,000 and 1,600 meters as Wreckers dethrone five-time conference champions Danbury

Led by long-distance specialist Henry Wynne, the Staples indoor track team captured the FCIAC title on Thursday at Hillhouse High School, ending Danbury's five-year reign as conference champions.

Wynne won the 1,000 meters and 1,600 meters, helping the Wreckers secure their first team crown since 2006 with 107 points. Danbury (70) placed second, followed by Greenwich (52), New Canaan (43) and Trumbull (28).

After running the 1,000 and 1,600, Wynne finished second in the 3,200 meters, giving him a pair of golds and a silver on the night.

Wynne (9.40.40) finished 2 1/2 seconds behind Ridgefield's Benjamin O'Regan in the 3,200. Fairfield Warde's Harry Warnick captured the bronze.

Staples clinched the overall victory when Dean Hefnaway (13-feet-6) and Matt Mula finished first and second in the pole vault.

In the 1,000 meters, Wynne (2.31.66) defeated Warnick (2:32.89) by just over a second with Fairfield Ludlowe's Jack White (2:34.73) placing third.

In the 1,600, Wynne (4:29.33) finished more than two seconds ahead of runner-up Thomas Moore of Danbury (4:29.33). Staples' Nikolaj Kulia was third with a time of 4:33.19.

Staples' Jon Heil (6.79) and David Hoffman ((6.82) finished second and third, respectively, in the 55-meter dash.

The Staples girls finished fourth.  Lexie Schachne won the pole vault with a leap of 11 feet, 3 inches while Caroline Koenig finished third in the 3,200 meters (11:42.10) and Taylor Scanlin won a bronze in the 600 meters (1:38.35).
