Strong Kids Storm Staples in Triathlon
Kids participated on Sunday in the Strong Kids Triathlon organized by the Westport Weston Family Y.
On Sunday morning, as overcast skies hung ominously overhead in Westport, local kids participated in the inaugural running of the Westport Weston Family Y Strong Kids Triathlon at Staples High School.
Through slightly less than ideal conditions, the youths made their way through the three stage event with effervescent enthusiasm. Multiple heats were assembled for participants with groupings according to age.
The course, fittingly modified (a 75 meter swim, 1.25 mile bike ride, 1/2 mile run for ages 6-9 and 150m swim, 2.5 mile bike ride, 1 mile run for ages 10 and over) was still challenging enough to have many a parent wheezing, "Are we there yet? Whew!"

The kids however, managed, with a little help from parents, to make the course look like child's play. The final race of the day included something for the tots and not-so tot kindergarten grads (ages 3 - 6); a daunting 100 meter yard dash.
All through the event, many of the tots were aching to get in on the activities as their siblings were cheered and coached through the course, and now it was their turn. Bridled energy stood at the starting line. Adrenaline pumping. A false start from a tot in lane one signaled what was at stake.

There would be no "Walk Not Run" signs, or stern admonishments about speeding from older siblings and adults. (What do they know anyway?) Just an open field with those same adoring loved ones at the other end compelling them to run, run, run.
Anxious parents awaited at the finish line, tuned into every stride prepared to become an instant EMT should the need arise. Thankfully, there were no false steps here, just elated tots greeted and hoisted like the champions by their doting parents. Adorned with competition ribbons and T-shirts, everyone was a winner Sunday at the Inaugural Strong Kids Triathlon. Nothing but strong kids here.
The Strong Kids Campaign is a fundraising vehicle for the Family Y that enables the non-profit organization to ensure that no one is excluded from Y activities due to financial limitations.
