Surgical Oncologist Swims for her Patients

St Vincent's Dr. Jill Rubinstein is Swimming Across the Sound to help her cancer patients

As a Surgical Oncologist at St. Vincent’s Medical Center, I have the honor of participating in the care of patients dealing with cancer in their lives.

I was motivated to join the swim because of one particular patient. A young man with very aggressive and advanced cancer. Unfortunately, we knew that he would not make it. He was living abroad thousands of miles from his family. His mother fought long and hard to get a Visa. She finally got the Visa and then quickly realized she could not afford to buy a plane ticket. We immediately called the Swim, and they got her a plane ticket. She made it in time to see her son. That is why I put my name on the list.

Last year was my first time swimming in the Swim Across the Sound – I really enjoyed the sense of community at the event. There is something deeply moving and inspiring to swim alongside so many people committed to this cause and satisfying to watch my own patients benefit from these efforts.

The impact of a cancer diagnosis can have far reaching consequences, beyond the physical and the emotional. The disruption in daily life and the financial and countless logistical burdens can take a hard situation and push it to the point of overwhelming. The funds raised from the event truly make the difference in allowing patients to focus on their treatment.

The role the Swim Assistance Fund plays in my patients’ cancer care is unlike anything I can provide. Cancer care is a team effort.

Our role in Surgical Oncology is an important one and we work hard to provide patients comfort, reassurance, and excellence in cancer care. We are one part of a larger, deeply committed multidisciplinary team – working closely with our colleagues in medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, and many other specialties to ensure all patients receive the best possible care. But even the most coordinated medical care cannot address every challenge patients face.

This is where the Swim adds an entirely new dimension to the services we are able to provide. Swim works to alleviate the financial burdens caused by this disease where we, as providers, wouldn’t otherwise be able to help.

I am so grateful that this fund is part of the services we provide. Our cancer center provides comprehensive care, keeping focus not just on the disease and its treatment, but on the person living with the disease. The Swim Across the Sound is an incredible asset in making this possible.
