Suspect Accused Of Identity Theft And Forgery In Westport: Police

The suspect, from California, tried to make fraudulent withdrawals from the bank account of a Westport victim, according to authorities.

WESTPORT, CT — A 36-year-old Tracy, California man was arrested last week on first-degree identity theft and first-degree forgery charges, after Westport police said he tried to make fraudulent withdraws from a Westport victim's credit card account.

Jordan Smith was arrested on a warrant at Stamford Superior Court, where he was answering unrelated charges.

The case started in April last year when Westport police received a complaint about unauthorized attempts to withdraw money from the victim's bank account.

"The complainant reported that he was notified by his bank that a suspect had attempted to withdraw money from his account," wrote Westport Police Lt. Eric Woods in a statement. "The bank reported that the suspect deposited fraudulent checks and then attempted to withdraw money from the complainant’s account. Through the use of search warrants, surveillance cameras, and Law Enforcement sharing, Jordan Smith was identified as the suspect in this case."

Smith is being held in lieu of bail of $100,000, and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
