Suspects Break Into Unlocked Home As Family Sleeps: Westport PD

An unlocked vehicle with the kets left inside was stolen from a home and the suspect was arrested in Fairfield, police said.

WESTPORT, CT — Westport Police are investigating several burglaries and the theft of a car. During the early morning hours of Sunday one residence and 3 garages were burglarized, police said.

During the course of the residential burglary, suspects entered through an unlocked door while the residents were sleeping and at least one item was stolen, police said. The three garages, 2 attached and one detached, had also been unsecured and were entered while the residents were home sleeping. At least 14 unlocked cars throughout the town were rifled through and some had items stolen, police said.

Additionally, one vehicle was stolen, which had been left unlocked with the keys inside. The vehicle was later spotted by Fairfield Police and led them on a brief pursuit. A 17 year old juvenile suspect from Bridgeport was arrested following K-9 tracks by both Fairfield and Westport Police, police said.

These crimes remain under investigation by the Westport Police Department. "We are deploying additional patrol officers during the overnight hours and advise residents to assist us by locking their vehicles, their homes and activating security systems if their homes are equipped. We ask that residents please review their home surveillance from the early morning hours of December 23rd and report any suspicious activity observed on their surveillance to the Westport Police Department via the non-emergency line (203) 341-6000."
