The family, who lived in Scarsdale, N.Y., were identified as Bridgewater Associates executive Bruce Steinberg, his wife, Irene, and their three sons.
The incident occurred after a charter plane crashed into a mountain near Punta Islita Airport, killing everyone on board, as reported by the New York Times. "The Government of Costa Rica deeply regrets the death of 10 American passengers and two Costa Rican pilots in the aircraft air crash," Luis Guillermo Solis Rivera, President of Costa Rica, said in a Facebook post Sunday.

The Steinberg family was active in philanthropy and the local Jewish community, Bloomberg Markets reported. Authorities in Costa Rica are investigating the cause of the crash.
Assemblywoman Amy Paulin (D-Scarsdale) offered her condolences to the family.
"I can't imagine the overwhelming grief the Steinberg family is feeling today," she said in a statement. "While I didn't know the Steinbergs personally, they were Scarsdale residents.
"I know my community — I have lived in Scarsdale for decades — and I know that it is at times like this that we will pull together to help this family in any way possible," Paulin said.
