Westport Flash Flooding Prompts 13 Vehicle Rescues After Up To 7 Inches Of Rain: First Selectman

WESTPORT, CT — Flash flooding hit Westport on Sunday morning, prompting emergency responders to rescue 13 people trapped in vehicles by floodwaters, according to First Selectman Kevin Christie.

A 12:30 p.m. update from the state identified the Norwalk-to-Westport area as among the hardest hit in Connecticut. The area received 6 to 7 inches of rain after 7 a.m., with rainfall rates reaching 3 to 4 inches per hour.

Westport fire, police, EMS, Public Works and dispatch personnel continued responding to calls throughout town. Town departments were also coordinating with Eversource to secure or disconnect utilities where necessary and make affected properties safe.

"The Town appreciates the assistance and support of its regional and state partners," Christie said in a statement. "Residents should continue to avoid flooded roads, never drive around barricades, and give emergency crews room to work. Even as the rain subsides, standing water and other hazards may remain. If you experience an emergency at home or on the road, please call 911."

Town officials are assessing the extent of the damage and will provide updates through emergency alerts, social media, its website and press releases.
