Westport Police Increase Compo Beach Patrols After Large Youth Gatherings

WESTPORT, CT — Westport police have increased patrols at Compo Beach following several large gatherings of high school-age youths that prompted complaints about underage drinking, marijuana use, disturbances and property damage, according to the department.

Police said they have received formal and informal complaints from Westport Parks and Recreation staff and area residents about gatherings involving an estimated 200 to 300 people or more.

The gatherings have generally occurred on weekends and after the beach's 10 p.m. closing time, police said. Complaints have included allegations of disturbances, underage drinking, marijuana use, littering and property damage.

On Friday, Sept. 18, and Saturday, Sept. 19, officers encountered and dispersed gatherings of that size at Compo Beach, according to police. The department said the groups have included local youths as well as people from out of state.

The Westport Police Department, Westport Prevention Coalition and Office of the First Selectman reminded parents and youths of the town's zero-tolerance policy regarding underage drinking and cannabis use. Police also said crimes against people and property would not be tolerated.

Police have increased patrols in the area and said officers will issue citations for observed violations. The department also asked parents to monitor their children's activities and discourage them from participating in the gatherings.

The Westport Prevention Coalition will hold a discussion for Westport parents about the issue from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, at Toquet Hall.

"As we continue to work to provide resources and educational opportunities to empower families, we want to hear parents' perspectives and suggestions on this issue," said Margaret Watt, prevention director at Positive Directions, which manages the coalition. "As a community coalition, we're dedicated to working with all stakeholders to keep our kids safe and healthy."
