UPDATE: Westport Police Sgt. Robert Myer, 48, Remembered for 23 Years of Service
The sergeant, who was also a member of the Newtown Board of Police Commissioners, died in his Elizabeth Street home in Newtown Wednesday.
Updated to add the following statements from the Westport Police Department and First Selectman Jim Marpe on the passing of Sgt. Robert Myer:
The Westport Police Department and the Town of Westport are saddened by the tragic loss of Sergeant Robert Myer. We extend our sincerest condolences to his family and friends.
First Selectman Jim Marpe said, “It was with profound sadness that I learned of Sergeant Myer’s passing. He represented the Police Department and the Town of Westport with utmost professionalism and honor. Our focus now is to support his fellow Police Officers at this difficult time. And I respectfully request that all Westporters do the same.”
Sergeant Myer served the Westport community, his hometown, with honor and distinction for more than 23 years with the Westport Police Department. He first joined the department as an intern in 1991 and was hired as a fulltime Officer in 1992. He was promoted to the rank of Corporal in 2014 and to the rank of Sergeant in 2015. Upon receiving this promotion, he was assigned as a supervisor in the Patrol Division.
In addition to his regular assigned duties, he served as a member of the Southwest Regional Emergency Response Team as a crisis negotiator, was a member of the Westport Police Department Crisis Intervention Team, the WPD Marine Division and WPD Honor Guard. He received numerous awards throughout his career as well as dozens of letters from citizens thanking him for his assistance and dedication.
Chief Foti Koskinas said, “Regardless of his assignment, Sgt. Myer always served our community to the best of his abilities. Bob will be greatly missed. Our deepest sympathies go out to his family and we again ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this extremely difficult time.”

Myer's death is being referred to as "untimely," and the cause is being investigated by Newtown police detectives and the Connecticut State Medical Examiner's Office.
Emergency personnel responded to Myer's home at 6:42 a.m. on an initial report of a person needing medical assistance. Upon arrival, however, they discovered that Myer was already deceased.

Newtown police initially withheld Myer's name from the press pending notification of next of kin, but released his name just before 1:30 p.m.
Patch reached out to the Westport Police Department for comment but had not heard back by press time.
In addition to being a Westport police sergeant, Myer also was a member of the Newtown Board of Police Commissioners. He was promoted to sergeant in December of last year.
“On behalf of Chief James Viadero and the Newtown Police Department, this day is a tragic loss for the family, friends and community of Newtown,” the department said in a statement.
