Update: Westport's 9/10 Softball Team Wins State Title

Westport defeated Vernon-Rockville to advance to Saturday's championship where the team faced Seymour.

Updated at 6:01 p.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2016: The Westport 9/10 softball team won the U10 state championship Saturday with a 4-0 victory over Seymour, reports Westport Now.

Pitcher Morgan Carnahan threw a complete game shutout, and contributed a hit, as did Grace Alfero, Olivia Stubbs and Kate McDonald. Congratulations to the team!

Original story: WESTPORT, CT — Westport defeated Vernon-Rockville 4-2 on Thursday night to advance to 9/10 State Softball Tournament Championship in Trumbull this weekend.

Westport pitcher Morgan Carathan tossed a one-hitter and struck out 11 batters. Carathan supported her effort by hitting a two-run double to left center off of Vernon-Rockville's Caitlin Chatterton in the first inning.

The Westport squad added a run in the third inning charged to Chatterton and a run in the fifth inning off of Lexi Real. Chatterton (three) and Real (seven) combined for 10 strikeouts for Vernon-Rockville. Madison Johanson and Morgan Geisinger made key defensive plays for Vernon-Rockville. Chloe Keane had Vernon-Rockville's lone hit, a single to right field that drove in Johanson and Real in the top of the fifth inning.

The loss drops Vernon-Rockville to 1 -1 in the four-team double-elimination tournament finals and 10 - 2 overall in tournament play. Vernon-Rockville will play Seymour (1-1) on Friday night, Seymour eliminated Waterford (0 - 2) from the tournament on Thursday night.

The winner of the Vernon-Rockville vs. Seymour game will then play Westport (2 - 0). To win the state championship, a team must beat their opponent on successive days (Saturday and Sunday) due to the double elimination format of the tournament.
