What's Open, What's Closed: July 4th Weekend in Westport
Most places are closed on Friday, July 4th, although quite a bit is still open on Saturday, July 5. Westport's fireworks are postponed to Monday, July 7.
Government offices and some other places close on Friday, Independence Day, July 4th and remain closed through the weekend, although there are some important exceptions to that.
Heres a list of what's open and what's closed this weekend:
THURSDAY, July 3
Fireworks displays: Westport's, Norwalk's and Stratford's Independence Day fireworks events, each originally scheduled for this evening, have each been postponed — Norwalk's and Stratford's to Saturday, July 5; Westport's to Monday, July 7.
Metro-North will have extra trains departing Grand Central Terminal on Thursday, July 3.
Westport Library will close at 6 p.m.
FRIDAY, July 4
The Maritime Aquarium is open (it only closes on Thanksgiving and Christmas).
"Stepping Stones Museum for Children [in Norwalk] will close at 3 p.m. on Independence Day. Join us that day for a 'Red, White and Goo' live demonstration at 2 p.m. Watch the preparation video now. The Solar Express train will only run in the morning." — an announcement on the museum's website.
Metro-North: "A Sunday schedule will operate on July 4, with several additional trains on the Harlem and New Haven Lines to get you to and from the annual Macy's Fireworks. Please see a current timetable or visit our schedules page."
In Darien: A temporary closure of Rt. 1 will take place in much of downtown Darien because of the YWCA of Darien-Norwalk's "Push-n-Pull" parade. Any family with kids is invited to join the parade late in the morning.
U.S. government offices are closed.
Post offices are closed.
Connecticut state government offices are closed.
The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles is closed.
American Automobile Association Southern New England offices are closed.
Westport Town Hall and town offices are closed.
The town Recycling Center is closed.
Banks, all or almost all —even TD Banks are closed. (All banks in the state have the option of remaining open on public holidays. In practice, TD Bank is closed the least.)
The New York Stock Exchange is closed.
Almost all non-retail businesses, and many retail businesses, are closed, including Costco in Norwalk.
SATURDAY, July 5
Norwalk's Independence Day fireworks display and concert at Calf Pasture Beach (rescheduled from July 3); Stratford's fireworks display has also been postponed from July 3 to this day.
The town Recycling Center is open.
Post offices are open.
The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles office in Norwalk is open for normal Saturday hours of 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
American Automobile Association Southern New England offices are closed.
MONDAY, July 7
Fireworks displays: Westport's fireworks display, originally scheduled for Thursday, July 3, has been postponed to this day because of concerns about weather.
TRANSPORTATION
Wheels, the Norwalk Transit District, will have no service on Friday, July 4.
Connecticut Transit in Stamford and Darien will operate on a Sunday schedule for Friday, July 4.
Metro-North will have extra trains departing Grand Central Terminal on Thursday, July 3. Also, according to this Metro-North announcement: "A Sunday schedule will operate on July 4, with several additional trains on the Harlem and New Haven Lines to get you to and from the annual Macy's Fireworks. Please see a current timetable or visit our schedules page."
On Monday, July 7, Metro-North will change it's schedule.
