Here's what's open and what's closed this Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Martin Luther King Jr. is recognized with a national holiday on Monday, Jan. 19. Many workplaces are closed for the day; most stores are open.
FRIDAY, Jan. 16
CLOSING EARLY
- Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles offices will close early at 12:30 p.m., remain closed on Saturday and reopen Tuesday at 7:45 a.m. All AAA offices will be open to process renewals for driver licenses and non-driver ID cards during their normal business hours.

- Westport Public Schools
- Westport Town Hall and town government offices (But the Westport Recycling Center remains open.)
- Westport Library (But Darien Library remains open.)
- Westport/Weston Family Y: Regular youth classes are canceled, but a Vacation Schedule is offered. (See “Westport/Weston Family Y” section below for more details.)
- Connecticut state government offices, including the Connecticut Lottery
- Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles offices are closed on Saturday; offices reopen Tuesday at 7:45 a.m. All AAA offices will be open to process renewals for driver licenses and non-driver ID cards during their normal business hours.
- Connecticut Lottery Corp.: “While the headquarters will not be open for business, the web site and automated phone system will be available to obtain information. Regularly scheduled lottery drawings will occur.” Crossroads Card & Gift in Norwalk, a “high-tier claim center” for the lottery, will be open regular hours from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

- University of Connecticut-Stamford is between semesters (classes resume Tuesday, Jan. 20)

- The New York Stock Exchange (most of the rest of the financial industry follows the NYSE holiday schedule)
- BANKS in Connecticut have the option of remaining open on state-recognized holidays if they notifiy customers in advance. People’s Bank, like most banks, will be closed. (TDBank will be open.)

- Crossroads Card & Gift in Norwalk, a “high-tier claim center” for the lottery, will be open regular hours from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- Maritime Aquarium, open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Stepping Stones Museum for Children: “Please join us in the morning for a special themed activity.”
- TD Bank (Banks in Connecticut have the option of remaining open on state-recognized holidays if they notifiy customers in advance.)
WESTPORT/WESTON FAMILY Y
Vacation Day Special
“Our Family YMCA’s School Age Program will be offering a Vacation Day Special on Monday, Jan. 19, as local schools are closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
“The program runs at the Y’s Bedford Family Center at 14 Allen Raymond Lane from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm and will feature swimming and gym time at the Family YMCA, as well as play time and movie. Children (for K-5th Grade) should bring a nut-free lunch, a bathing suit and towel, and wear sneakers and socks.

Gymnastics Camp: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
With local schools closed on Monday, Jan. 19 in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, ourYMCA Gymnastics Center at 145 Main St. in Norwalk will be offering a Gymnastics Camp for children ages 5 and up. The camp will take place from 11 am to 3 pm and will include gymnastics, games and a craft project!
Please have your child bring lunch and snack. The fee is $45, no Y membership required. To register online, please click here.
No Youth Classes: 2:30 to 9 p.m.
“Youth classes scheduled for Monday, Jan. 19, will not be held as local schools have the day off in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.”
TRANSPORTATION CHANGES
- “Metro-North will operate on a Saturday schedule with 32 additional trains. Off-peak fares are in effect all day.” More information here.
