WETHERSFIELD, CT — A woman was hospitalized Thursday morning after a hospital bed caught fire inside a Wethersfield home, causing heavy smoke throughout the residence, fire officials said.
The Wethersfield Fire Department responded to 14 Main St. at approximately 8:28 a.m. Oct. 29 after receiving a report of a hospital bed on fire inside the home with a burn victim.
The first arriving fire officer reported smoke coming from the structure and learned that occupants had helped the burn victim escape from the home, according to a news release issued by the department.
Firefighters located a hospital bed burning on the first floor and quickly extinguished the flames.
The fire caused heavy smoke conditions throughout the residence, prompting firefighters to ventilate the home.
A woman was transported to Hartford Hospital for treatment of burn injuries and smoke inhalation, officials said.
Two other occupants suffered minor injuries. The fire department did not specify whether they required hospital treatment.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Wethersfield Fire Marshal's Office, Wethersfield Police Department and Connecticut State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit.
Main Street was reopened to traffic as of 9:45 a.m., officials said.
Additional details about the injured woman and the circumstances surrounding the fire were not immediately released.
