Legal fireworks that were disposed in a plastic trash barrel are being blamed for a fire Monday night that badly damaged a local house.

WETHERSFIELD, CT — Local firefighters are blaming the discarding of legal fireworks for a blaze that badly damaged a home on Mitchell Court Monday night.

According to the Wethersfield Volunteer Fire Department, the first reports of a structure fire at 12 Mitchell Court came in at about 9:17 p.m.

The WVFD said the blaze started after the remains of legal fireworks were dumped in a plastic trash barrel.

WVFD officials said the first units arriving saw the rear exterior of the structure in flames.

"Responding units were returning from training sessions and were able to respond quickly to the scene," wrote the WVFD.

Firefighters said the fire was quickly knocked down before it could extend inside the building.

All occupants were able to escape and there were no injuries reported.
