"He was feared by teenage boys with mischief on their minds," officers quipped on Facebook. "Jack will be sorely missed."
One Facebook tribute said, "Good guy who kept a lot of us adolescents from serious trouble."
Another was more detailed:
"RIP Mr Goldberg, from that 14 yr old punk, that thought he knew everything. Jack was hard on me, especially the back of my head, which met with the far end of his flashlight one night as I tried to outrun him. He never brought it up again in words but sometimes with a look, that only he could give. At that moment I hated him, but from that moment on I had nothing but respect for him. I grew to like him and we would sometimes talk late at night over coffee as I was working my shift at the Food Bag. He was a tough SOB, hard to like(till you got to know him)but exactly the right kinda cop. I never felt safer than when Mr Goldberg was around. I would like his family to know that he had a hand in knocking me right back onto the path, that I could've easily strayed from. Thank you Mr Goldberg , RIP."
Another post read, "I'm laughing while I sit here and read how tough Jack was.. To me he was a big huge teddy bear. He was my second father, the one who would let me have candy. He would pick me up and hug me so hard I thought I would break. He was also the one police officer that, other than my father, made me feel like the safest little girl in the world."
Black bunting adorned the WPD headquarters in Goldberg's honor.
