U.S. Olympians With Connecticut Ties: How They Fared
The closing ceremony of the Rio Olympics brought an end to a memorable Summer Games.

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL — As the closing ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympic Games wrapped up a very memorable two weeks of competition, we take a look at how the athletes of Team USA with strong Connecticut ties performed.
Note: this list only pertains to members of the U.S. team, and does not include Connecticut athletes representing other countries.
Basketball (women's)

- Sue Bird (UConn 1998-2002), Tina Charles (UConn 2006-2010, Connecticut Sun 2010-2013), Maya Moore (UConn 2007-2011), Breanna Stewart (UConn 2012-2016), Diana Taurasi (UConn 2000-2004), Lindsay Whalen (Connecticut Sun 2004-2009)
- For the sixth straight Olympics, the American team won the gold medal, defeating Spain 101-72 in the finals.
Canoeing
- Devin McEwan (Salisbury)
- Placed 10th in double canoe slalom final with partner Casey Eichfeld.

- Melissa Gonzalez (UConn 2011)
- The U.S. fell to eventual bronze medalist Germany 2-1 in the quarterfinals.
Rowing
- Andrew Campbell, Jr. (New Canaan High School 2010)
- Finished fifth in lightweight double sculls final with partner Joshua Konieczny.
. - Charlie Cole (New Canaan High School 2003, Yale University 2007)
- Finished seventh in men's four.
. - Austin Hack (Old Lyme High School 2010)
- Placed fourth in men's eights.
Rugby
- Chris Wyles (Stamford)
- U.S. defeated Spain 24-12 in ninth-place match.
Sailing
- Thomas Barrows III (Yale University 2010), Joe Morris (Yale University 2012)
- Finished 19th in men's 49er (skiff).

- With partner David Hughes, placed fourth in men's 470 (dinghy).
Soccer (women's)
- Alyssa Naeher (Seymour; Christian Heritage School-Trumbull 2006)
- U.S. lost to Sweden in quarterfinals.
Track and field
- Kate Grace (Yale University 2011)
- Placed eighth in finals of 800 meter run.
. - Donn Cabral (Glastonbury High School 2008)
- Placed eighth in finals of 3,000 meter steeplechase.
. - Mike Hartfield (Manchester High School, 2008)
- Placed 25th in long jump qualifying, did not advance.
Water polo
- Thomas Dunstan (New Canaan)
- U.S. placed fifth in Group B in preliminary rounds, did not advance to quarterfinals.
The closing ceremony of the Rio Olympics will be aired at 8 p.m. Sunday on NBC.
