Fund Set Up To Help Wethersfield Family Displaced By Fire: Update

The inferno required the aid of several area fire departments, including Rocky Hill, Newington, Cromwell, Berlin and Glastonbury.

WETHERSFIELD, CT — A family member of the people displaced by a Thursday morning blaze in Wethersfield said the children living there lost their home after only recently losing their father.

Laura Engel of North Carolina wrote on GoFundMe that the family of her sister, Carol Hurley, made it out OK in the early morning inferno, but everything they owned was lost, including their home and cars in the garage.

"They recently lost their father (Mike Hurley) so they are still dealing with that loss. Anything you can donate would be greatly appreciated. They literally ran out of the house in the middle of the night with the clothes on their backs," wrote Engal on GoFundMe. "Not only did they lose all of their clothes and personal belongings, but even their cars were destroyed."

Wethersfield Fire Department Chief Brian Schroll said Thursday morning firefighters were dispatched to a home on Apple Hill for a reported garage fire at about 12:50 a.m.

He said when firefighters first arrived, there was heavy fire showing from both the garage and first floor of the house.

Luckily for the people living inside, they were all able to get out prior to the fire department's arrival, Schroll said.

The blaze did require mutual aid from multiple area departments, he said, with the Rocky Hill, Newington, Cromwell and Berlin fire departments assisting.

In addition, Schroll said, the Glastonbury Fire Department provided town coverage for WFD's Co. 1 unit, which is based on Main Street in Wethersfield.

According to Schroll, the blaze is still under investigation by the Wethersfield Fire Marshal's Office.
