WILTON, CT — A New York man is accused of attempting to cash a stolen IRS tax refund check at a Wilton bank before fleeing from police, according to authorities.
Officers were dispatched April 28 to Webster Bank on Town Green Road after a report of a suspicious man trying to cash a check that did not belong to him, police said.
Police said the suspect, identified as Tyrese Niles, 24, of the Bronx, had a fraudulent identification and was attempting to cash a stolen refund check when officers arrived.
Niles ran from the scene on foot but was quickly caught on the Town Green lawn before he could reach a getaway vehicle.
He was arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including second-degree identity theft, conspiracy to commit identity theft, criminal impersonation, second-degree forgery, tampering with evidence, interfering with an officer, and third-degree larceny, police said.
Niles was held on a $25,000 bond and was unable to post the required amount, police said. He was transported to Stamford Superior Court for arraignment.
