WILTON, CT — Wilton police are urging residents to lock their vehicles after sharing surveillance videos they said illustrate a growing problem across the region.

In a social media post Sunday, the Wilton Police Department said the town, along with many neighboring communities, has seen an increase in vehicle thefts, attempted vehicle thefts and car break-ins.

The department posted two surveillance videos showing people checking parked vehicles overnight.

In one video, a person gets out of a vehicle and tries the door handles of two parked cars before moving on after realizing they were locked. Another video appears to show a person opening the door of an unlocked vehicle, climbing inside and searching the interior.

Police said the difference between becoming a victim and avoiding one can come down to a few seconds.

Police urged residents to:

"Don't make it easy," the department said.
