WILTON, CT — Wilton schools were temporarily placed in secure mode Monday morning after police received a report of an older man allegedly carrying a "barrel" over his shoulder toward the Clune Center polling location at Wilton High School, authorities said.

The Wilton Police Department received the report around 11:42 a.m. Oct. 26 and immediately dispatched officers to investigate, according to a news release.

Schools were placed in secure mode as a precaution while officers investigated the report.

Police cleared the Clune Center but did not locate anyone matching the description of the suspicious individual.

However, surveillance footage showed an older man wearing a military-green jacket and carrying a walking cane as he walked toward the Clune Center shortly before the complaint was received, police said.

The man partially matched the description provided in the initial report but had already left the property before officers arrived.

"Through a review of surveillance footage he was found to be on the premises for legitimate purposes and did not pose any threat to by-standers or staff," police said.

The secure hold at the schools was lifted shortly afterward, allowing normal activities to resume.

Police thanked community members for promptly reporting suspicious activity and for their patience and cooperation during the investigation.
