Crash in Wilton Leads to Driver's Arrest for Allegedly Fleeing Earlier Accident Scene

Police found a trail of blood leading from the road where the accident occurred towards the direction of the driver's home.

Wilton police were called to the scene of a crash on March 7 at around 5 a.m. on Cedar Road.

At the scene, police found a single vehicle on a snow bank with major damage and with no driver.

The vehicle had gone off the roadway and crashed through a utility pole causing the pole to break at its base and fall on the rear of the car, police said. The pole broke the rear window of the car and came to rest on the roadway, blocking both lanes of traffic.

According to police, the front airbags had deployed in the car and there was blood on the driver’s seat, the driver’s airbag, the steering wheel and all along the exterior of the vehicle on the driver’s side. Police also found a trail of blood leading in the direction of Cedar Road towards Sturges Ridge Road.

Police later located the driver, John Underwood, 19, at this residence on Sturges Ridge Road. He refused medical attention.

Underwood was arrested as he was involved in a previous crash in Wilton where he allegedly fled the scene, police said. He was processed at the Wilton Police Department and charged with evading responsibility involving property damage and failure to drive in the proper lane.

Underwood posted a $500 bond and was given a court date of March 19.
