Report Lists Top Reasons Why Wilton Police Officers Pull Over Your Vehicle
A total of 3,983 traffic stops were conducted in Wilton between Oct. 1, 2013 and Sept. 30, 2014.

A recent report by the Connecticut Racial Profiling Prohibition Project found that the Wilton Police Department conducted 3,893 traffic stops from Oct. 1, 2013 through Sept. 30, 2014.
The reasons a Wilton police officer is likely to pull you over include: 23.4 percent; speeding infractions; 6.9 percent; cell phone offenses, 16.3 percent; defective lights, 2.1 percent; display of plates, 0.3 percent; equipment violation, 8.8 percent; moving violation, 18.5 percent; registration offense, 0.8 percent; seatbelts, 5.7 percent; stop signs, 1.2 percent; suspended license, 9.2 percent; failure to obey traffic control signals, 1.6 percent; window tint and 5.1 percent; other.
The town had one of the highest number of registration violations across all municipal departments.

There is a good chance you will be given a verbal or a written warning rather than a ticket in Wilton.
According to the report, among the 3,893 stops, officers gave a ticket 22.48 percent of the time, a written warning 33.32 percent of the time and a verbal warning 37.37 percent of the time.

Of Wilton’s total traffic stops 7.96 percent are for Black drivers and 94.84 percent of those stops involve non-residents, according to the report. Hispanics account for 12.36 percent of Wilton’s traffic stops and 95.43 percent of those involve non-residents, the report states.
Overall, 836 resident stops were made in Wilton with 5.5 percent of these stops accounting for minority residents. Wilton’s minority population comprises 8.09 percent of its total population that is of legal driving age.
