Wilton Announces America Recycles Day Fall Activities

There'll be a series of recycling and clean-up activities throughout October and November leading up to America Recycles Day on Nov. 15

WILTON, CT — The Town of Wilton is participating in Keep America Beautiful’s America Recycles Day and will be kicking off a series of recycling and clean-up activities this fall throughout October and November leading up to America Recycles Day on Nov. 15. This is the Town’s first partnership with Keep America Beautiful (KAB) since becoming an affiliate earlier this year.

Activities will include:

Household HazWaste Collection Day will be held on Saturday, Oct. 13 from 9 a.m.- 1 p.m at Miller/Driscoll School parking lot at 217 Wolfpit Road. This event will enable Wilton residents to safely dispose of unwanted household hazardous waste by bringing it to the collection where a certified hazardous waste contractor will provide appropriate and responsible disposal of the unwanted products. This event is for the collection of household hazardous waste only. Paint and electronics will not be accepted. The collection is open to all Wilton residents, as well as residents of Norwalk, Darien, Greenwich, Stamford, Weston, and Westport. Proof of residency (a driver's license) is required. Learn the Recycling ABCs. Do you know what is and isn’t recyclable? Do you need to separate recyclables? Do items need to be rinsed and cleaned? Is it okay to bag recyclables? During the week of Oct. 15, the Town will be releasing information and helpful tools to answer all questions on C recycling requirements.

Starting on Oct. 22, the Wilton Environmental Affairs office will be providing 50 residents with litter pickers at no charge. If residents need help finding a spot to clean up, the Environmental Affairs office can assign an area in need of clean-up. Residents may stop by the Environmental Affairs office anytime Monday-Friday between the hours of 8 a.m.-4 p.m. to pick up litter pickers. The Town of Wilton, in cooperation with Take 2 Inc, will be hosting a free E-Waste Recycling and Hard Drive Shredding Day at the Wilton Town Hall Complex at 238 Danbury Road on Saturday, Nov. 3 between the hours of 9 a.m. -1 p.m. Take 2 will be on-site to unload vehicles and safely package and transport all e-waste to its Waterbury facility to be recycled. Take 2 will also have their mobile hard drive shredder on-site. Hard drives should be removed from computers and laptops; Take 2 will not be able to remove hard drives from devices. Accepted materials include, but are not limited to: computers, laptops, printers, fax machines, televisions, stereos, monitors, cell phones, tablets, video games, game consoles, VCR/DVD players, remotes, keyboards, small appliances, and light bulbs and batteries. Unacceptable materials include: smoke detectors, ballasts, car batteries, propane tanks, paint, household hazardous waste, and appliances containing Freon (i.e., air conditioners, refrigerators and dehumidifiers). The collection is open and free to all Connecticut residents. Businesses may only bring loose hard drives for free shredding. From Nov. 5 through America Recycles Day on Nov. 15, the Town will run the Take the Pledge to Recycle initiative. Residents will be encouraged to take a pledge to increase their recycling. Family friendly activities surrounding this initiative will be announced.

In addition to Town sponsored activities, Wilton Go Green will be sponsoring a Zero Waste Week at the Wilton Schools during the week of Oct. 22. The first Zero Waste Schools Coalition meeting will also be held on Oct. 17 at 7-9 p.m. at Middlebrook School cafeteria at 131 School Road bringing educational professionals and community members together from around the area to share ideas about how to most effectively implement Zero Waste programs.
