Wilton PD to Crack Down on Driving While Using Cell Phones

The Distracted Driving Campaign is about more than just issuing tickets.

Thinking of texting or talking on your cell while driving?

Think again, because the Wilton Police Department is going to be starting a campaign to crack down on motor vehicle operators who illegally use their mobile devices while driving.

The Distracted Driving Campaign will begin Monday, Nov. 9, and will continue through Nov. 22.

Police officials said fines for violating Connecticut’s cell phone and texting laws range from $150 for a first offense to $300 for a second, with $500 for each subsequent violation.

While someone who breaks the law will be ticketed, police said that is the least of a driver’s concerns.

The ultimate goal of the campaign is to ensure the public’s safety while they are traveling on Connecticut’s roads.

Wilton police are hoping for voluntary compliance of the distracted driving laws through education and awareness.
