Aging Windsor Pool Plan Returns For Review

WINDSOR, CT — Plans for the aging Veterans Pool will return to the table Wednesday as Windsor officials consider what could become a multimillion-dollar replacement project.

The Town Improvements Committee will discuss the Veterans Pool concept study during a special meeting scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall.

No vote is listed on the agenda, but the discussion marks the next step for a project that has been under review since last year.

The Public Building Commission voted 5-0 in May to recommend what officials called “Option D” to the Town Council. Meeting minutes describe it as a more budget-friendly baseline option but do not provide its estimated cost or detailed scope.

The town initially asked its consultant to prepare three concepts: two that would keep the pool at its current location and another that would build a replacement on the Sage Park Middle School tennis courts without affecting the field house.

A fourth option was developed after town management and recreation officials reviewed the original concepts.

The existing Veterans Pool is located at 50 Sage Park Road near Windsor High School. Believed to have been built in the late 1950s or early 1960s, it is the oldest pool facility owned by the town and is used mainly for summer camp programs.

The L-shaped pool holds about 153,400 gallons of water and ranges from 3 to 9 feet deep, according to the town’s request for proposals.

A consultant’s assessment confirmed that the pool shell is deteriorating and the mechanical systems need attention, according to Public Building Commission minutes.

The town appropriated $85,000 in December for the concept study. Officials said the work would help determine whether the pool should be renovated, expanded or completely replaced.

The study was also expected to address accessibility, energy and water use, maintenance needs and the pool’s ability to serve summer camps, swimming lessons, recreational users and the Windsor Water Rats swim team.

Windsor’s capital improvement plan previously estimated the full project at about $4.13 million, including design, construction, bonding expenses and contingency funds. That figure was developed before Option D was selected as the preferred concept and could change as the project moves forward.

Wednesday’s Town Improvements Committee meeting will be held in the Ludlow Room at Town Hall, 275 Broad St. Residents may also participate remotely through the Zoom information included with the meeting notice.

As Patch previously reported, residents were invited to review the initial concepts and offer feedback during an April public meeting.
