WINDSOR, CT — The one-lane bottleneck on Interstate 291 is staying, but drivers will be moved to the opposite side of the westbound Bissell Bridge beginning Wednesday.
The Connecticut Department of Transportation is changing the construction pattern between Exit 2 in South Windsor and Exit 1D in Windsor.
The current left-lane closure will become a right-lane closure, according to a CTDOT advisory. Traffic will continue through the work zone in one 11-foot-wide lane.
Signs will direct motorists through the revised pattern. The state advised drivers to reduce their speed and warned that weather or unexpected construction issues could alter the schedule.
The traffic change is the latest stage of a $16.874 million rehabilitation of the bridge, which carries I-291 over the Connecticut River between Windsor and South Windsor.
Work includes paving, safety upgrades, bridge-joint reconstruction and repairs to the bridge's upper and lower structures. McNamee Construction Corp. was awarded the contract in May.
The westbound side has been reduced to one lane since June 18. Patch previously reported that CTDOT had not provided a firm date for restoring both lanes.
The full rehabilitation project is scheduled to continue through Nov. 12, 2027. Other traffic changes are expected as construction moves through different stages.
