WINDSOR, CT — A leaking roof at Clover Street School could cost nearly $2.4 million to replace.
The Windsor Board of Education is considering a partial roof replacement covering approximately 41,969 square feet of the elementary school.
The sections targeted for replacement were installed in 1995 and 1997 and have exceeded the expected 20- to 25-year lifespan of the roofing system, according to a report prepared for the board.
School officials said the roof has developed numerous leaks in recent years. Water has damaged parts of the building as well as equipment, furniture and supplies.
The existing roofing would be removed down to the metal roof deck and replaced with a fully adhered thermoplastic system. Existing roof drains would also be replaced, and scuppers would be added where needed.
The preliminary cost is approximately $2.387 million, including a construction contingency.
The project qualifies for partial reimbursement from the state. Windsor's estimated reimbursement rate is 48 percent, potentially leaving the town responsible for roughly $1.24 million if the full reimbursement is received.
The Board of Education is being asked to approve the project and its educational specifications. Formal approval would also be needed from the Town Council before Windsor could apply for state reimbursement.
The project was included on the school board's Sept. 15 agenda. The report did not include a construction schedule.
