Windsor veterans and surviving spouses eligible for a disabled veterans tax exemption must submit an annual application by Friday, Jan. 1, 2027. The requirement applies even to previous recipients, according to an Assessor's Office reminder posted on WindsorFire.org.
The exemption covers qualifying permanently and totally disabled veterans with a 100% service-connected disability rating. The reminder also identifies municipal options for surviving spouses and veterans with a service-connected total disability based on individual unemployability. Eligible applicants may qualify for an exemption equal to the assessed value of their primary dwelling or one motor vehicle.
Applications must include documentation establishing the qualifying Department of Veterans Affairs determination, unless the disability rating is unchanged and the exemption was previously granted. An annual application remains mandatory even when sufficient VA documentation is already on file. Missing the application and documentation deadline means the exemption will not apply for the upcoming tax year, according to the reminder.
Applications are available at the Assessor's Office and through the town assessor's webpage. Applicants may submit their application and required VA disability letter in person, by mail to the Assessor's Office, 275 Broad St., Windsor, Connecticut 06095-2994, or by email to townassessor@windsorct.gov.
The notice also lists an Oct. 1 deadline for filing a DD214 with the Town Clerk's Office to receive the benefit, but it does not specify the year. Questions about the application process can be directed to the Assessor's Office at 860-285-1817.
