WINDSOR, CT — Here are some recent notable accomplishments by local college students, as provided by readMedia Newswire.

Eastern Connecticut State University, Willimantic CT

  • A number of civic-minded students from Eastern Connecticut State University are serving the community this spring semester as Student Leaders with Eastern's Center for Community Engagement (CCE). A student leader is an experienced student volunteer who has been hired and trained by the CCE to recruit, train and manage volunteers, serve as a liaison with community partners, and plan and run service programs. Among the student leaders are Ayanna McDougald of Windsor, who majors in Health Sciences and oversees the Barrows STEM Academy after-school program and the Food Recovery program; and Justin Smith of Windsor, who majors in Finance and oversees the Barrows STEM Academy after school program and the Windham Middle School enrichment program.
  • Five students from Eastern Connecticut State University went to the 2018 IMPACT National Student Engagement Conference in Dayton, Ohio, from March 1-4. The participants engaged in thoughtful discussion on topics ranging from mental health, to public schools, to community engagement. Among the students in attendance was Ayanna McDougald of Windsor. McDougald, who majors in Health Sciences, discussed mentoring in communities. The goal of the presentation was to answer the question, "Does where we come from affect the attention and development that we need?" The discussion also tackled issues such as the differences between urban and rural communities, female mentoring groups and how to set aside personal bias in the best interest of girls in need.
  • The 2017-18 Eastern Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team is looking to return to the victor's stand. With a core of eight seniors leading the team, the Warriors are hoping to secure the team's first Little East Conference championship since 2013. .Among the students playing for this year's team is Tristan Kijak of Windsor, who plays the midfield position. Kijak's major is Biology.

  • Elena Peters of Windsor participated as one of the hosts at Grove City College national history honorary society's Western Pennsylvania Regional Conference. Grove City College's Alpha-Alpha-Lambda Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta recently hosted students from a number of colleges and universities at the national history honorary society's Western Pennsylvania Regional Conference. The conference on March 10 on campus featured more than two dozen students presenting their research on myriad historical topics, from the Vietnam War to pre-modern Christianity to the vices of Colonial America.
