Recent notable accomplishments by college students who reside in Windsor.

WINDSOR, CT — Here are some recent notable achievements for college students from Windsor, as reported by readMedia Newswire.

Eastern Connecticut State University, Willimantic CT

  • Eastern Connecticut State University recently inducted a number of students into its Eta Omega chapter of the Beta Beta Beta National Biological Honor Society. The event recognizes students who major in biology and who have demonstrated excellence in scholarship, research and other academic pursuits.
    Taylor Brown 'of Windsor was one of the inductees. The Beta Beta Beta National Biological Honor Society was founded in 1922 and today has more than 175,000 lifetime members in more than 430 chapters throughout the United States. The Eta Omega Chapter at Eastern was founded in 1997.
  • The Third Annual CREATE Conference at Eastern Connecticut State University took place on April 21. CREATE stands for "Celebrating Research Excellence and Artistic Talent at Eastern," and is the University's premier conference showcasing student research and creative activity. The one-day conference featured more than 300 Eastern undergraduates who presented talks, professional posters, live music, dance performances, art and photography exhibits, documentary films and panel discussions.
    Participants from Windsor were Taylor Brown, who majors in Biology and presented a poster titled "Milking For Profit"; Hannah Cheney, who majors in Environmental Earth Science and presented a poster titled "Energy Audit On Eastford Elementary School In Connecticut"; and Dominique McLean, who majors in Early Childhood Education and Psychology and presented two oral presentations: "Effects of Toys on the Quality of Young Children's Play: Effects of Age, Socioeconomic Status, Gender, and Ethnicity" and "How Preschool Teachers Introduce New Play Materials: Impact on Play Quality."
  • Deirdre Volk, a student at Eastern Connecticut State University, had her artwork published in the 2017 edition of the student literary journal "Eastern Exposure." Volk hails from Windsor and majors in Pre-Early Childhood Education and Sociology. "Eastern Exposure" is published annually by the Eastern Writers Guild, a student-run organization. The journal is composed entirely of student work.
  • A number of Eastern Connecticut State University students were recently inducted into Lambda Pi Eta, the national honor society for the field of communication. Elizabeth Riordan of Windsor was one of the inductees. Riordan's major is Elementary Education and Communication. The society recognizes students who have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, a communication studies GPA of at least 3.25, are in the upper 35 percent of their graduating class, are enrolled in good standing and display a commitment to the field of communication.

  • Ashley Nicole Santos of Windsor is the recipient of the 2017 Springfield College Award for Outstanding Graduate Student. This award recognizes a graduate student who has taken an active leadership role on campus and, through this role, has affected positive change on campus or in the larger community. The Springfield College Division of Student Affairs recognizes student leaders for their significant contributions to Springfield College and/or the city of Springfield at the annual Stepping Up Day Awards Ceremony each year.
