Clover Street School Holds Annual Fifth Grade Poetry Slam During National Poetry Month

Nationally recognized poet Elizabeth Thomas will emcee the poetry slam on the evening of April 28th

In honor of National Poetry Month, Clover Street School will host their Annual Fifth Grade Poetry Slam on April 28, 2017 at 6:15 p.m. at the school.

As a culmination of yearlong Challenge enrichment poetry workshops in the fifth grade classrooms, nationally recognized poet Elizabeth Thomas is visiting all fifth graders in April. Elizabeth Thomas is a national youth poetry slam team coach. She also designs and teaches writing programs and workshops for schools and organizations throughout the U.S. After spending four days working with the fifth graders on dramatic presentations of their original writing, Thomas will emcee the poetry slam on the evening of April 28th. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the slam begins at 6:15. The Windsor community is invited to join this powerful event.

The poet-in-residence program and the slam are activities for the entire fifth grade. It is the culmination of a Challenge Resource program during which Lisa Thomas, Clover Challenge Resource teacher, presents poetry analysis and writing workshops as whole class enrichment in fifth grade classes. This supports the district’s literacy curriculum as well as other district goals related to citizenship, bullying, and public speaking.
