Young Motorcyclist Killed After Crash Shuts Down I-91

The crash closed lanes on I-91 north and led to closures in both directions, officials said.

WINDSOR, CT — A 26-year-old motorcyclist was killed Monday night in a crash that shut down Interstate 91 in Windsor, according to state police.

The crash was reported at 8:28 p.m. Monday, May 25, on I-91 northbound in Windsor, south of exits 39 and 41, officials said.

State police said a 2019 Toyota Tacoma was traveling north in the right-center lane when a 2010 Ducati Streetfighter approached from behind in the right lane. For an unknown reason, the motorcycle hit the left side of the Toyota’s rear end, according to state police.

After the crash, the Toyota came to a controlled stop on the shoulder, state police said. The Toyota driver had no apparent injury and refused medical treatment, according to the report.

State police said the motorcycle traveled to the left side of the highway, went onto the paved median and hit the Jersey barrier. The rider, identified as Juan Miguel Martinez, 26, of North Hampton, Massachusetts, was separated from the motorcycle and came to rest on I-91 southbound.

Martinez suffered serious injuries and was taken by East Windsor EMS to Hartford Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, state police said.

The Toyota had minor damage and was driven from the scene, according to state police. The motorcycle had disabling damage and was towed.

The case remains under investigation. State police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash, or anyone with dashcam video who was driving through the area at the time, to contact Trooper First Class John Wilson at john.wilson@ct.gov.
