Portland, OR - A convicted felon with "a significant and violent criminal history on the East Coast" is being sought by Oregon authorities in connection with the kidnapping, sexual assault and shooting of a woman that took place Friday morning.

Anthony Stone has no known ties to Portland or the West Coast. Sources and court records indicate that Stone's record is mostly for incidents in Windsor, Connecticut.

Police said just before 2:23 a.m. Friday, a 41-year-old woman was walking with a male friend when a man believed to be Stone pulled his car to the curb, jumped out and pointed a gun at the couple. Stone demanded the woman get in the car, and after she complied, Stone sped off.

Just before 4 a.m., officers were called to an intersection where they found the woman. She had been shot, and as she was riding in the ambulance, she told police she had been sexually assaulted.

The shooting victim is expected to survive, police said.

About 10 minutes later, police responded to a report that a man had crashed his car on the westbound lane of the approach to the Hawthorne Bridge.

Witnesses said as the man fled the crash, then fired shots at his car and started running across the bridge. Police determined that the man was Stone.

All indications are the incident is a stranger-on-stranger crime, police say.

Stone is on the run and considered armed and dangerous. Authorities say that he "threatened to shoot it out with police."

He is described as being in his late 30s to early 40s, 5-feet-9, 230 pounds, unknown clothing and armed with a handgun.

The search for Stone led to streets and bridges being closed downtown for a couple of hours.
