Hazardous Chemical Forces Windsor School Evacuation

WINDSOR, CT — A hazardous chemical discovery prompted an evacuation at a Windsor magnet school, though no injuries were reported.

Employees at CREC’s Academy of Aerospace and Engineering found a crystallized bottle of nitric acid while cleaning a chemical storage area shortly after 3:15 p.m. Sept. 5, according to a report from CT Insider.

Everyone inside the building was evacuated and accounted for, the Windsor Volunteer Fire Department said.

Windsor firefighters and police responded to the school, along with the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. A hazardous materials response team was called to handle the chemical.

The team entered the building, addressed the hazard and removed the container and its contents, according to fire officials. Firefighters remained at the scene to assist and secure the area.

No one was injured.

Nitric acid is a corrosive chemical that can be toxic if inhaled. It can also accelerate fires and cause combustible materials to ignite.

CREC’s Academy of Aerospace and Engineering is located at 1101 Kennedy Road and serves students in grades six through 12.

Officials did not report any continuing danger at the school or disruption to regular classes.
