Tractor-Trailer Rollover Closes I-291 Ramp

WINDSOR, CT — A tractor-trailer carrying non-hazardous bales of trash rolled over Monday afternoon on I-291 west near Exit 1A in Windsor, according to fire officials.

The crash happened just after 1:30 p.m. Monday near the ramp to I-91, according to the South Windsor Fire Department. Connecticut State Police said preliminary information indicated the rollover happened at about 1:41 p.m.

The driver self-extricated and was taken to a local hospital, fire officials said.

South Windsor firefighters responded alongside the Windsor Volunteer Fire Department, officials said.

Fire officials said South Windsor requested the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection because of a fuel spill. DEEP requested Environmental Services Inc. to handle the spill before the truck could be removed, according to fire officials.

The truck’s cargo was described as non-hazardous bales of trash.

The ramp was expected to remain closed for an unknown period of time, fire officials said.

State police initially said no injuries were reported. No further details were immediately available.

The ramp remained closed as of 5 p.m. Monday.
