King, Lazy Lester, Jimmy Rushing, Joe Turner, Little Walter, Johnny Young, Magic Sam, Lightnin' Slim, Slim Harpo, Arthur Alexander, Muddy Waters. With these bands as both models and peers, Sugar Ray & The Bluetones have established their rightful place in the blues world. Over the past 30 years, the band, let by Sugar Ray Norcia with long-time cohorts Neil Gouvin on drums and bassist Michael "Mudcat" Ward with "Monster" Mike Welch on guitar, have released seven albums since 1980.
Mike Crandall grew up in the North Stonington, CT area, home to such greats as Roomful of Blues, Sugar Ray Norcia and many others. He began playing harmonica in high school often playing as he walked to and from school. Crandall began his first band, Joe Vic and the Blues Inhalers, in the late 1980 s and started the Mike Crandall Band in the mid '90 s. The band is a three time winner of the Best Blues Band for the CT Blues Society in 2000, 2002 and 2008. The band was named the Boston Blues Society Best Blues Band winner in 2010, and are two time finalists of the prestigious International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tenn.
