Top 10 Ways Dieters Can Finally Say No-No to Yo-YO
CT Holistic Physician Addresses Underlying Conditions to Keep the Weight from Coming Back

If you have struggled with yo-yo dieting, you are certainly not alone. Research shows that up to 80 percent of people who initially lose weight with dieting will regain their lost weight within 12 months. Holistic internal medicine and integrative medicine specialist, Dr. Eileen Comia of Advance Biomedical Treatment Center (ABTC) in Bloomfield, believes the reason why weight comes back is because most diets are for short term gains only, not practical, and they don’t address the underlying problems that cause obesity.
“To eliminate obesity and other health conditions like high blood pressure and high cholesterol, we need to correct the sources of those problems, such as an unhealthy body composition (Lean-Mass-To-Fat-Mass Ratio), insulin resistance, hormone imbalance, and inflammation,” explains Dr. Comia. “I also believe that the main cause of obesity is the accumulation of toxicants in the body and the first route of entry is commonly the stomach.”
Dr. Comia notes that chemicals are everywhere - air, food, water, dust, and everyday products. Over time, a build-up of toxins in our bodies can create health issues including obesity. She recommends a 10-day Metabolic Detoxification Program that starts with a vegetarian diet, a protein powder enriched with sulfates that binds to toxins (rendering them more water-soluble), and a supplement that helps eliminate toxic waste. Daily probiotic supplements are then necessary to keep the digestive system healthy.

Following the detox, new research has shown that low-glycemic, high protein diets are more effective than low-fat diets in treating obesity, insulin-resistance, dyslipidemia (an abnormal amount of lipids, or fats, in the blood), cardiovascular disease, and Type II diabetes. Dr. Comia’s patients report less hunger, more energy, and higher compliance with this diet.
To break the pattern of yo-yo dieting, Dr Comia offers these 10 tips for success:

1. STOP thinking of WEIGHT loss, think of FAT loss and becoming healthy.
2. STOP checking your weight. Instead, watch the inches off your waistline.
3. STOP counting calories, start counting serving sizes of protein. Men need at least 5 servings of protein a day and women need at least 3 servings a day. Protein servings depend on amount of exercise.
4. Exercise contributes to only 20% of health, 80% is the right diet. Think protein, good fat, and vegetables for every meal; not carbohydrates. The more you exercise the more protein you should eat.
5. STOP eating gluten, dairy and starches. Follow the Paleo regimen = meat/fish/seafood + veggies.Eat FRESH food only.
6. STOP eating or drinking anything that says, “low fat”,” sugar-free”, “diet”, “zero calories” and anything that has fructose corn syrup, preservatives, additives, artificial food coloring, and artificial sweeteners.
7. STOP juicing or making smoothies even if all vegetables.
8. Never eat only once a day.
9. Drink half of your total weight in ounces of purified water a day.
10. Aim for 8 hours of straight sleep per night. Sleep is critical for fat loss.
“In order to keep the pounds from coming back, problems such as food addiction, anxiety, depression and mood swings also need to be rectified,” said Dr. Comia. “We offer natural solutions that don’t require medication.”
But the one thing that truly needs to be adjusted to ensure long term success is a person’s attitude.
“Most importantly, you have to understand why you are overweight and accept that you have to change your diet and lifestyle permanently so that you will feel happy and at peace with yourself,” concluded Dr. Comia.
