Helen Hudzik Smith passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 9 2018.
She was born on August 20, 1926 in Lowell, Massachusetts, the daughter of Jacob and Antonina (Sorota) Hudzik. Helen was the first in her family to graduate from college. She graduated from Lowell Teachers’ College (now part of the University of Massachusetts) with a degree in teaching.
She was passionate about her profession, first teaching at the elementary school level in East Hartford, then for many years in Windsor. She enjoyed coming across her former students in town. Even many years later, they would always recognize her and stop to talk. It gave her great pride that she had made a difference in the lives of the children she taught.

She met the love of her life, Charles Frederick Smith, at Hampton Beach, New Hampshire. He worked in an ice cream shop. She walked in, ordered a cup of coffee ice cream, and he served her the wrong flavor because he was so instantly smitten with her his head was spinning. They adored each other. They spent many happy years together.
The last few years of Charles’ life, she was his champion when he had to go into a nursing home. She was by his side constantly, making sure he was treated well until Charles died in 2001.
