Windsor Obituary: William Johnson, 88

Condolences to his family and friends.

William R. Johnson, 88, of Windsor, passed away on September 21, 2016 at Saint Francis Hospital. He was predeceased by the love of his life Helen (Gray) Johnson.

Born in Windsor on March 29, 1928, William was a son of the late William R. Johnson, Sr. and Hazel (Miller) Johnson. He was a graduate of John Fitch High School Class of 1946 and after graduation enlisted into military service. He joined the US Air Force and was proudly stationed in Guam, honorably serving for three years.

William returned to Connecticut and enrolled in UConn where he received his bachelor's degree in education. He later earned degrees from University of Hartford and Penn State. He began his celebrated career as an educator teaching mathematics in North Haven and later moved to his home town of Windsor, where he was a Math teacher, Chair of the Mathematics Department and Vice-Principal of Windsor High School.

After retirement in 1988, William served in numerous civic roles in Windsor including the Chairman of the Board of Education and the Chair of the Planning and Zoning Commission. William was an avid UConn Womens' Basketball fan and season ticket holder who greatly enjoyed watching the NY Yankees and football during his leisure time.

William and Helen built a home in Westerly, RI after her retirement and lived there for the six years prior to her passing in 1998. He then returned to Windsor to be closer to his loving family.

William is survived by two sons, Scott Johnson of Pompano Beach, FL and Chris Johnson and his wife Mary of Charlestown, RI formerly of Manchester; a daughter, Karen Komp and her husband Don of Windsor; a brother, Harold Johnson and his wife Adelaide of Andover, VT; six adored grandchildren, Brian Johnson and his wife Jenley, Jennifer Carrillo and her husband Jerrold, Ryan Johnson, Eric Johnson, Kelsey Komp and Doug Nickerson, and Casey Komp and Stephanie Curcio; 4 great-grandchildren, Noah Nickerson and Helena, Parker, and Ben Johnson. He also leaves loving nieces and nephews, cousins, and his church family at Grace Church. In addition to his beloved wife of 47 years, Helen Johnson, he was predeceased by his sister, Norma Marshall.

His family will receive friends on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2016 from 3 – 6 p.m. at Carmon Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave., Windsor. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Sept. 26th at Grace Episcopal Church, 311 Broad St., Windsor with private burial to be held in Windsor Veterans Memorial Cemetery at a later date.
