Windsor Wins First Football State Championship

Warriors roll past Notre Dame-West Haven in the Class L-Small title game.

The Windsor football team captured the first state title in program history, beating Notre Dame-West Haven 38-16 Saturday at Arute Field at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain.

The Warriors (12-0) jumped out to a 19-0 lead and held on for the victory.

The defense was instrumental in the victory, especially in closing it out with two scores in the third quarter on a 69-yard interception return by Eric Vinson and an 89-yard fumble return by Tyler Coyle.

The defense also forced three other turnovers in the game.

“It means a lot to me, and it means a lot to the town,” Windsor coach Rob Fleeting told Mike Pucci of the New Haven Register/GameTimeCT. “We have so much support in our town. I really wanted to do this for the town of Windsor because they’ve been very supportive of me, my family, our coaching staff and our kids. It means the world to me right now.”

In addition to the defensive touchdown, Coyle scored on a 20-yard pass from John Nolan in the first quarter and on an 18-yard pass in the second quarter.

Nolan also had a 67-yard touchdown pass to Courtney Rush in the first quarter. Jordan Knight closed out the Windsor scoring with a 65-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
